Bean
and Bailey is made up of Bradley Bean and Jackson Bailey. Bradley
and Jackson met
in 1992 at Carson-Newman College where
they were both freshman living in the same dorm. Along with mutual
friends, they began using their leisure time in the dorm to make
humorous videos and comedy sketches. This led to official “shows” where
the group of 5 guys (brilliantly named “Give Me 5”)
would entertain high school students who were visiting the college. “Give
Me 5” soon began performing for local church youth groups
as well as regular campus events at Carson-Newman.
In
1996 with graduation fast approaching, 3 of the 5 guys decided
it was time to leave
the group (they each got
married).
This left Bradley and Jackson, the remaining 2 members, with
a choice to
make: Either
let the comedy performing come to an end, or figure out a way to
turn a 5-man show into a 2-man show. It didn’t
take long for Bradley and Jackson to realize that this 2-man idea
could work well, and they immediately received warm responses from
local audiences. (They briefly decided that using their last names
wasn’t quite clever enough, and changed their name to “Something
Like That”… self-admittedly a rather stupid name… before
reverting to “Bean and Bailey” for good.)
It
was 1999 when Bean and Bailey decided to make the transition
to comedy as a profession,
as they were given an opportunity to
be involved with college campus entertainment. From 4 campus shows
in 1999 to about 35 campus shows in 2000, Bean and Bailey were
on their way to a professional career and thus needed to consider
leaving their other employment. Bradley resigned from his 3rd grade
teaching job, and Jackson transitioned out of his job at a television
station where he had served as the “Kids Club” host.
Now
in their 8th year of professional comedy, Bean and
Bailey have taken their
laughter act all across America. From California
to Maine, and Florida to New Mexico (not to mention a few states
in between), Bean and Bailey are being enthusiastically received
as a refreshing alternative in today’s field of comedy. Most
refreshing is that their comedy is CLEAN.
A
Bean and Bailey show includes a song about finding love at
Wal-Mart, a lament to the
atrocities of roadkill, and a song warning of the
evils of spandex just to name a few. Most recently they have received
warm responses to their Christmas medley (sung in and out of season),
in which Jackson comes up with quite a controversial theory on
the real identity of Santa. Recently audiences are also enjoying
their new song highlighting the awkward silence of men’s
public restrooms. Of course the consistent defining element of
their show is the verbal sparring between Bean, the “straight” man
and Bailey, the “cut-up.”
What will they come up with next? Time will tell, and from the
responses they are getting from audiences everywhere, there should
be plenty of time for more hilarious antics from Bean and Bailey.
